HOW MANY LIFE-THREATENING INCIDENTS DUE TO SUSPICIOUS ODORS HAVE OCCURRED IN OPERATING ROOMS DURING SURGERIES AT UVA HEALTH UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL?
This is horrifying.
We have the same questions about the ongoing dangerous odors that our doctors asked via TheTruthAboutUVAHealth.com…
Why has UVA Leadership been unable to identify the cause of suspicious odors during surgeries in its operating rooms?
We know of three life-threatening incidents in the past two months when dangerous situations unfolded after suspicious odors occurred during surgeries in operating rooms including OR 25 and OR 33 at the UVA University Hospital.
These are vascular and cardiac surgery ORs.
During these life-threatening incidents:
Rapid, extreme measures were taken by our colleagues to ensure the safety of everyone in the OR and that the patients survived.
Multiple doctors, nurses and staff became symptomatic which included light-headedness and feeling ill.
A trainee became symptomatic and had to be assisted out.
A member of the operating team stopped breathing, was rushed from the OR to the ER on a stretcher and thankfully survived.
The member of the operating team who stopped breathing during the incident was billed by UVA Health for their ER visit.
A Department Chair became symptomatic and had to leave the OR.
What would FOIA requests show UVA Health and UVA Health University Medical Center Leaders discussed and decided to do after each of these life-threatening incidents?
Were proper safety protocols followed by UVA Health and UVA University Medical Center Leaders in the aftermath of each of these life-threatening incidents?
Was the fire department called after the first of these incidents in which patients, doctors, nurses and staff were exposed to unsafe conditions during operations?
Did consultants declare OR 25 safe after the first incident without a root cause being identified?
Have similar incidents been reported in other areas of the hospital?
What are the leaders of UVA Health and UVA Health University Medical Center doing in response to these dangerous incidents to ensure the safety of all patients, doctors, nurses and staff?
Has UVA Leadership spent as much time and money identifying and remedying these life-threatening conditions as they have on lawyers and public relations in recent months?
How would you feel about these life-threatening incidents if you or one of your loved ones or colleagues had been a patient or a member of the operating teams in those ORs?

What is going on at UVA Health?
We are Concerned Citizens of Charlottesville and Patients of UVA Health who are troubled by what we have heard from many UVA Health professionals over the past year.
These professionals are not only our doctors and nurses but also our friends, family and neighbors. We believe our community should value and protect its health care workers who have dedicated their lives to helping UVA patients.
A Parrhesiastes is someone who speaks the truth in a clear and honest way…
It's about the courage to speak one’s mind even when it's difficult or unpopular…to prioritize truth over social niceties or personal gain...
But speaking the truth can be dangerous. A Parrhesiastes understands this risk and is willing to face the consequences, from social disapproval to vindictive employers or even violence...
Because ultimately Parrhesiastes act out of a sense of duty.
They believe speaking the truth is necessary for the greater good and to protect the people and institution they love.
